Buyers Guide: What to consider when buying a stylish pushchair

Natalie writes…Buying a pushchair can be an agonising decision, especially when you’re trying to balance your style sensibilities with function, so here is my guide to helping you make that decision.
Aside from the style aesthetics, you need to consider suitability from birth (padding and lie flat options), travel system capability, handle style and height, manoeuvrability, suspension, folding, accessories, weight and overall size, and how quickly you’re having the next child!
Other things you’re likely to consider are design and innovation, desirability (yes some people do follow what celebs push), opportunities to customise, and you may even consider if there are ‘too many’ of a certain type.

So here goes:

Padding and Lie Flat Options – If, like the majority of pushchair buyers you’re planning to use it from birth, you need to ensure that there is plenty of padding for support, snugness and sheltering from the elements, but also that if it’s not a travel system (see below) that it is capable of lying flat. Do your research because different manufacturers have different ideas of what ‘lie flat’ actually means and ideally if they mention ‘true lie flat’ all the better. It will become confusing at times because for example, Quinny say their Buzz pushchair is suitable from birth but by John Lewis’s own standards, they suggest that the pushchair seat is suitable from 6 months.

Do you need a travel system? – Having a pushchair that’s a ‘travel system’ basically means it’s compatible usually with a carrycot and a rear facing infant car seat. You may see it referred to as a 3 in 1 travel system or if it only does two things, a 2 in 1. This option is increasingly popular but of course, it’s more costly and what you need to evaluate is whether you’ll actually use the carrycot.
If you’re buying the Maxi Cosi Cabrio fix infant car seat already (won a host of awards and considered the best on the market), it’s well worth considering one of the number of cool pushchairs that it’s compatible with including all Bugaboo’s, Quinny’s, Micralite’s, and their own Mura pushchairs to name but a few.
I frequently used the car seat for quick trips and for meeting up with people where there was a possibility I’d have to get into their car at some point with her.

Handle style and height – It’s difficult to know until you have used a pushchair, but whether your pushchair has a handlebar (left) or a typical ‘old style’ handle on each side is actually a key factor.
The super comfortable handlebar on my Quinny Buzz, like on the Bugaboo, is a godsend and allows you to spread the breadth of your hands and arms comfortably. You notice the difference when you push a pushchair with the other handles because you may end up with repetitive strain injury like one of my close friends. You can’t push these types of pushchair one handed and trust me, sometimes you need to. Padding and looped handles also help. Get a feel for it as much as possible before you buy.
Handle height also means that other people can push it, namely taller people, like for instance your partner. Nobody needs a backache!

Manoeuvrability
There are a number of factors that can impact on this but the overall point is can you move around in tricky spaces? Can you turn corners relatively easy? Can you come off or onto curbs without hobbling yourself? Can you get on the bus with it? Does it feel like you have to put a lot of effort into pushing it or manoeuvring it because trust me, if it does, this will get old very, very quickly! If you live on a hill like I do, you don’t need something that literally becomes an uphill struggle. Can it cope on rough terrain? If the front wheels don’t have the option to swivel or be fixed, I would steer clear of the pushchair. Large back wheels also help. The Stokke Xplory on the left can go into two wheel mode for pulling up stairs and up hills.

Suspension
Quite a few pushchairs, especially travel systems make noise about their suspension. Don’t ignore this though because if you’re going to be using the pushchair a lot, especially for extended walks or mixed terrain, you’ll want something that gives your baby a smooth ride and minimises vibrations from making contact with exterior forces.

Folding
This is a biggie because trust me, when you have a squawking baby and need to fold it with them in your arms and the shopping spilling out all over the gaff, you’ll thank me for reminding you of this!
We spent a lot of time visiting John Lewis and our local baby gear store trying out pushchairs and trust me, most of them are fiddly in some way and do require practice because if it was that easy to fold down, you’d be concerned about safety… Just as important as folding down though is opening it. Quinny Buzz’s are a doddle to open because they’re automatic when you release the clip. The Quinny Zapp (right) is the world’s smallest pushchair when folded.

Accessories
The fact that you can rack up a lorra lorra cash buying accessories for your pushchair is one of my pet peeves because to be fair, a number of accessories are necessities. If you’re on a strict budget, you need to factor accessories into the equation. Do however look out for deals online, plus in store, these can potentially be your bargaining tool. Be careful of going too crazy. You need a footmuff but if it’s January, you can probably hold off on buying a parasol till you need it. A number of lightweight pushchairs will expect you to buy the all weather kit as extra, for example the Mamas and Papas Nipi. Stokke Xplory and the various Bugaboo accessories are exceptional quality and lookout for customised options from the likes of Small Paul by Paul Frank and also Stokke’s new accessory kits.

Weight and Overall Size
There are times when size matters and when it comes to pushchairs, this is one of them. The likelihood is that unless you are loaded and never have to use public transport and have a load of flunkies to attend to your every need, the weight and overall size of the pushchair are important to you!
The key thing to look for when researching the weight is that it must be the weight with the seat on – not just the chassis. You will find a lot of sites will confuse you by making a pushchair sound lighter than it is.

Travel system wise, the lightest one on the market is the Micralite Fastfold (above), although the Mamas and Papas Pliko (left) claim the same feat. The former has repeatedly won Which?’s best buy and is 6.8kg whilst the latter has also won lots of awards but is around 9kg. The likelihood if you’re buying a travel system is that it will be 6.8 kg to 11kg, but there are heavier. If you’re buying a lightweight pushchair, under 7kg is a must. The Mamas and Papas Nipi which is also a Which? Best Buy is 6.4kg and of course, Maclaren are the leaders in lightweight pushchairs with their Quest’s coming in at 6.2 kg.

The Next Child
If you know you’re going to be working on the next baby fairly soon, I would certainly give some serious thought to buying a pushchair that has the option of converting into a double because otherwise, the likelihood is that you’ll have to sell the one you have and fork out for a new one depending on their age. Twin pushchairs where there is the option for one to lie flat and the other to be upright are quite popular – see Maclaren’s Twin Techno which has been used by Angelina Jolie and there is of course the very popular inline pushchair, Phil and Ted’s Sport. If you’re a style fiend, you will compromise a bit when it comes to twin pushchairs although the Phil and Ted’s Vibe (right) is certainly a sexier offering.

And the other stuff:

Design and innovation wise, Stokke Xplory, the Concord Neo Carbon, anything by Bugaboo, Silver Cross (their Dazzles in particular), the Mamas and Papas Skate, and Quinny, pretty much lead the pack and all for different reasons and naturally, they are the pricier options on the market, although they are all travel systems. If you like your products well designed with innovative features and looking great, these will undoubtedly be first on your list.
Style is in the eye of the beholder though and there are quite a few cheaper options that also deliver great bang for your style buck, such as Micralite Fastfold’s, Maclaren, particularly their Objects of Design range (the Butchers Stripe is pictured left), the Nipabout 3 in 1, and the Air Buggy to name but a few.

Desirability plays a large part in how popular pushchairs become. Sometimes it’s because they’re unusual (at least when they first come out) as seen with Stokke Xplory’s, Bugaboo’s and Quinny’s and challenge perception, often it’s because they’re expensive, and yes, often it’s because the more celebrities that push them, the more they slip into consciousness.
But…the thing about something gaining mass popularity is the ‘mass’ part. I’ve heard stories of people mixing up their Bugaboo Chameleon’s and there are a lot of these and Quinny Buzz’s on the streets these days. That’s why you should snap up limited edition colours or customise with accessories to make them a bit more individual.

What else can I recommend?

If you can, wait till after your baby is born and you have a real idea of how you’ll be using the pushchair.

If you buy before they arrive, spend time researching and testing out. John Lewis is brilliant (I can’t recommend them enough) but we also used the Baby Nest in Purley Way who are also excellent and a hit with many of my mama friends from all over Surrey. Local baby gear stores tend to have great selections and less craziness. They may also compete on price with online stores and be willing to bargain.

Set a budget but set it after you’ve researched prices and come up with your wish list, and then done a spot of compromising. It’s very difficult to budget if you don’t know what something costs! You could literally end up spending £60 – £1700 (that’s what a Concord Neo Carbon Costs).

If you’re on a tight budget, check out second hand or consider a robust lightweight option like a Silver Cross Dazzle or a Maclaren. There are a lot of second hand bargains to be had so shop around!

If you can, try out a friends one with their baby in it.

Remember that people buy pushchairs for different reasons and so learn how to filter opinion but do listen to nuggets of information on how they use it.
If the grandparents are going to be using it a lot, you may want to factor that in when choosing something with bells and whistles. Or buy a lightweight pushchair to keep at theirs…

5 Reasons to Wear Your Baby

Wearing your baby is convenient.

When you wear your baby, you are free to move without having to negotiate a stroller or carry a heavy car seat. Slings also serve as blankets, cushions, and as clothing!
Baby carriers allow for discreet breastfeeding on the go.

This makes breastfeeding easier for you and allows you to stay out of the house for more than 1.5 hours at a time with your newborn.
Wearing a baby is better for your body.

Carriers distribute weight across your body, making it much more comfortable than a baby in your arms. Plus, most carriers can be used for up to 35-40 lbs!
Wearing your baby helps to soothe fussiness, colic, and reflux.

Most new parents have a hard time finding time to exercise. Wearing your baby while walking adds additional weight and usually results in a nap for the baby!

Keys to baby wearing success:
1. Be sure baby is well-rested and well-fed before trying to use a new carrier.

2. Practice with a stuffed animal or baby doll before putting your child into a new carrier so you are comfortable with how to use it.

3. Once your baby is in the carrier, start moving. Go for a walk, talk to the baby, pat them on their back and reassure them that being in a carrier is a good thing.

4. Try to find other experienced baby wearers to help trouble shoot with you if you feel the carrier isn’t working for you.

5. Try different carries before giving up. When I first got a sling, I tried a cradle carry with my son and he hated it. I almost gave up, but someone showed me a kangaroo carry, which my son loved. Babies prefer different positions, so keep trying until you find what works for you and your child.

6. Wearing your baby shouldn’t cause discomfort. If you aren’t comfortable, seek assistance. Remember, baby wearing should be a fun and comfortable way to carry your baby.

7. Although your baby may look uncomfortable to you, babies love to be scrunched up. It reminds them of being in the womb. If your baby is uncomfortable, they will let you know!

8. Always use common sense when baby wearing. If you wouldn’t perform an activity while holding your baby, don’t do so while wearing your baby.

Baby Carrier Safety

Below you will find some general tips for safe use any baby carrier, baby sling, baby wrap, mei tai or other carrier. Please always refer to the instructions provided with your baby carrier for proper use of that particular carrier.

1. When putting your baby in the carrier, be sure you are standing in a safe place. Use the same common sense about choosing a place to tie on your baby as you would about choosing a place to stop to tie your shoes. For example, you would not stop in the middle of a busy walkway or parking lot to bend over and tie your shoes. Do not tie your baby carrier there, either.

2. Be sure there are not straps or other parts of your carrier that dangle lower than your bottom. Tuck them in. Loose ends can cause you to trip. Dangling cloth, whether from a baby carrier or from a blouse, could catch on fire while you cook. Use common sense!

3. Be careful not to bump baby's head on anything. It is possible to bump baby's head whether using a sling or carrying baby in your arms. Be especially careful of doorways when carrying baby on your hip or back.

4. Trust your instincts. If you feel that the baby is not secure, try again. Read the instructions again. If you can't figure out what you are doing wrong, check out online resources or get help from an experienced babywearer.

5. Have another adult help you when learning a new carry position or using a new carrier. Have your helper double check your work to be sure you followed the instructions correctly. Have your helper inspect the carrier to see if there is any way for the baby to slip.

6. Practice each new carrying position with a doll or teddy bear until you are really good at it. Only then should you try it with your child. And even then, if it's a back carry, go ahead and kneel on a soft surface. And check your work when you're done. And have another adult help you the first few times.

7. If you have a newborn (especially a preemie), check the baby’s chin and ensure it isn't touching his/her chest as this can cut off air supply. Generally a baby will tell you if s/he are uncomfortable, but this isn't always the case so be sure to visually check on your baby periodically.

1. Giving Up Too Easily
Many people get a carrier as a shower gift. They may try it once or twice and it doesn't feel comfortable for them or they feel like the baby's not comfortable in it, so they give up and think, "I'm just not a sling person." When moms feel this way it's usually because they were using the carrier incorrectly or they didn't spend a little time practicing with the carrier before putting the baby in it. When you get a carrier, you should take time to read the instructions. It sounds basic, but most people don't do it. It can also help to practice first with a doll or stuffed animal. That way you feel confident with what you're doing before you put the baby in and the baby starts crying and you feel panicked. A lot of people also make the mistake of starting out using a cradle carry, where the baby is low and across the stomach. That's a carry that most babies don't like and it's not the safest option either. Most babies prefer a tummy-to-tummy carry, meaning that they're upright with their head on your chest. So, try different positions and don't just assume that this horizontal, flat carry will be the best. A good bet is to try a position that mimics how you usually hold your baby. Babies also need time to get used to a sling. They really like gentle motion, so when you put the baby in the carrier, walk around or sway. That can help you both adjust.

2. Size Matters
The second mistake that I often see is that people buy a carrier that's too big or wear an adjustable carrier too loosely. That is almost universally the problem when people tell me that a carrier isn't working for them. Buying a carrier is not like buying a T-shirt, when if you're not sure that a medium is going to fit you, you just get the large. With carriers, you really need to get one that fits. When you wear a carrier too loosely, the baby doesn't feel secure. It's not safe. When a baby is in a carrier, he should feel as snug as if you were holding him. An oversized carrier is also ergonomically bad for your body. A properly used carrier should distribute the weight across your back. You should be using your core muscle to hold the weight. If a carrier is pulling on your neck and shoulders, you're either using it wrong or it's the wrong size. If you're not sure about this, find a baby-wearing group in your area and ask someone there for help. You can also carrymeaway.com.

3. Not Looking Beyond Bjorn
The Baby Bjorn-style carrier is probably the best-known and most available type. It serves a lot of parents really well, but it has its limitations. First of all, the Baby Bjorn is only for infants up to fifteen pounds or so, which gives people the impression that carrying is for really small babies. However, there are many carriers that can be used from newborn to toddler. I carry my four-year-old still and with the pouch I have. It's very comfortable. Also, the Baby Bjorn is only a front carrier. You can wear the baby facing out or in, but you can't do any other types of carries, like back or side. The other thing about that type of carrier is that they're not very snuggly. A baby's legs are spread apart, which most newborns do not like, and they're more strapped to you than snuggled. Different carriers are good for different things. The Bjorn is great if you want to be active, go hiking, walk around a city, but a ring carrier or a sling is better if you're looking to soothe or snuggle. There are a variety of carriers out there that can do more and can last you longer, so it's good to think about what you will use the carrier for, and buy the one best suited to that purpose.

In 2006, the Chinese sculptor/new dad Shi Jinsong showed Na Zha Baby Boutique, an "outrageously unsafe line of baby products" named after Na Zha [or Ne Zha, 哪吒] a troublemaking man-child Chinese deity who is now the god of lotteries.The original collection featured baroque strollers, a carriage, a walker, and other toys made out of Kung Fu-Klingon-style curved knives.

For this season, Shi has upgraded the Na Zha firepower, illustrating the difference between unsafe and deadly:

now everything's outfitted with machine guns and rocket launchers.

Here's just an example..

These types of carriers have snaps/buckles and preformed pockets/straps for babe, and are "structured" as compared to a more free-flowing sling or pouches.

These types resemble a mei-tai asian baby carrier, in that they often secure at the waist and over the shoulders.

They will often have buckles instead of straps that you tie together, making them look a little more "commercial" than other abc's may. The straps are often padded for comfort.

As with abc's, babe's head control should be taken into consideration (but not necessarily dissuade you) when buying a structured baby carrier. This is because babe will be held vertically, and will need some sort of support for "floppy baby head".

As the carriers are made en masse for a certain body type, some mamis have problems with a perfect fit (their torso may be too long or too short, the waist strap may hit above or below the waist, etc). Perfect fit is essential for proper baby wearing, as a bad fit means a bad/sore back and shoulders. But, many many mamis love their structured baby carriers!

As they look a little more "commercial" and have fewer ties/adjustments that need to be made (as compared to an abc), it seems more papis gravitate towards this style of carrier if they have already rejected pouches/slings/abc's. They also may fit the style of a mami who is not looking for something handmade/looking for something commercial, but supportive and a good product.

Structured carriers may come with extra options like a head cover to support/cover babe's head when thye fall asleep inside, a pouch on the front to carry soft things against/near babe like dipes/wipes, cell phone holders, etc.

Since they are often padded, they are less able to be stuffed into a diaper bag. But, as their shape lends the baby's weight to be dispersed across both shoulders & the waist of the wearer, it may be a good choice for long walks and/or mamis with older babies who may feel discomfort holding an older babe (or any babe) for long periods of time.

Out of the box, the Blink was almost ready to go. All I needed to do was pop the Canopy on.

Getting Started:

Opening the Blink is a breeze. Just unlock the lever and then lock the frame in place with your foot. The whole stroller opens out and pretty much falls in place.

Even though the Blink fits into the lightweight category, it has some great features that make it a good budget choice for parents.
For your child’s comfort, the Blink’s seat is spacious(13″ wide) and lightly padded.

From the seat to the top of the canopy measures a generous 25″, which could easily accommodate an older or larger child.

The Blink also has an over-sized canopy and visor that offers excellent protection from wind, rain and sun.

The canopy features a peek-a-boo window and a zippered storage pocket big enough to hold keys, a cell phone and a small wallet if necessary.

Some designer has come up with a "Smart Baby Case" space pod for wheeling a baby around. The designer's site says his client is Samsonite, the luggage people.

You put the baby in there butt-ass naked,

and an "auto-diaper" feature cleans up any unfortunate occurrences.

Air filters keep the air clean.

An baby monitor lets you check in on your baby without moving your neck.

Just weird and creepy.

At the airport, will your baby fit in the overhead bin, or do you have to check it?

Keep That Baby Swaddled
So you’ve got a new baby, right? What are you going to do?! I don’t know! You might be in trouble! But you’ve got to buckle down. You’re a parent now. You’d better put that child in a buggy. You’d better put that baby in the “Smart Baby Case.” It’s kind of like a Matrix robot nanny pod sort of thing.

It’s got several doors! The top door is just a little too small to pull the baby out of, but just large enough for parents to easily access the baby. The main door is the big one, the one that lets the baby get in and out. And of course, the Safety Breath doors: except when the air purification unit is on, these doors allow for safe breathing and they automatically shut when the pressure is too low!

Inside you’ll find the communication unit and LED screen. You can look at the baby and the baby can look at you, too! This screen is also near several airblowing units. On the top of this screen unit there’s an orange LED light in the form of the Samsonite logo which shows the quality of the air inside the pod.

Inside you’ll also notice the auto rocking unit operated by a small servo unit located between the wells. Auto Diaper around the bottom of the baby has a moisture sensor which gently flushes away waste with water, the same with solid waste, all flushed away with tubes to the waste storage unit at the front of the case.

Anatomi Paths as their called are custom fitted around the unique child. These are the foam-looking pads you see in the picture(s) below. They’re made of extremely soft, flexible material to support the baby’s body, especially the head and spine. The skull area is protected by liquid filled pads to prevent damage, sweating, and deformation.

The entire unit is powered by rechargeable batteries, alternatively it can be plugged right into the wall

There is a bit of a misunderstanding in that this is not a device for growing children during their whole life, it is just a device which can provide a safe and healthy condition during 2 or 3 hours while you can`t change your baby or staying in some poor facilities or places during a trip or airport.
Also, this hard case is equipped with removable door; it is usable without any door like other normal baby carriages. Using the door is just recommended in disaster conditions or air pollution or chemical pollution or some other bad condition for the baby’s health.

Yes! Simply clip in the coupling reducer that is right for your stroller, screw the coupling onto your frame, lock it in place with the coupling jaw, and away you go – it takes less than a minute! How old should my child be to ride on the Swiss Strolli Rider?

The Twin Techno will hold children from birth to 55 lbs in each seat. It will fit through standard doorways, so this means narrower seats — though my 3 ½-year-old and 18-month-old fit easily. The harness straps were a cinch to adjust the harness straps to fit and had a simple clasp.

To open the clasp, grab the buckle with your thumb in front and your forefinger behind, then push your fingers together to unsnap the buckle.

The seats are easily removable for washing (always a plus).

The sun canopies are water resistant and a raincover is included.

You can pack a lot in the shopping basket

.If you need more storage, Maclaren makes an organizer for their twin strollers.

Since the handles are not close together, if you want to hang a diaper bag on the handles, you’ll either need a wide double stroller bag (I like Skip Hop’s Duo Double) or use Kalencom’s Stroller Straps (read our review) to extend the reach of the straps on your regular diaper bag.

Sun/Weather Exposure

he sun canopy was fine. On really sunny days, an additional tie-on sun shade, a clip on parasol or a double UV cover may be helpful.

A rain cover is included and compact enough to fit in the hood pockets or baskets.

The Fold/Unfold

The Twin Techno has a double umbrella fold.

To fold: Pull up the lock in back of both the seats. Then use the foot pedal on the right side to collapse the stroller and fold the whole stroller forward. Push forward to engage the side auto locks.

To unfold: release both side locks, open the stroller, then, using your foot, push both footplates down fully to lock.

The Twin Techno is compact enough to fit in every size trunk. This would also be a good double stroller to take on a airplane trip, but I would recommend utilizing the Maclaren Carry bag with it, to protect against damage.

The first thing you need to do when stroller shopping is to consider your lifestyle. Choosing a stroller can depend on where you live. For example, a city-dweller may want a compact, lightweight one to navigate the public transportation system, whereas a suburbanite may opt for a travel system.
Secondly, test out the stroller in real-life situations. it does not look too bad

Tapi napkin still tak boleh cover bahagian kaki

But when you remove the head protecter..it does look ugly & tak kemas
